Raise Your Credit Rating to Forget Your Debt Past

Many people are not satisfied with their credit rating as they realize that a better credit rating can provide them with more options financially and more attractive offers on credit cards and loans.  While there is no immediate way to raise your credit rating, you most certainly can improve it over time with the necessary actions.

There are several important steps you should take if you want to raise your credit rating.  The first thing you should do is to obtain a current credit report.  You can get this report from a reporting agency like Equifax, TransUnion or Experian.  You may be charged for this report but knowing your starting point is a necessary step in improving your credit rating.  You should also carefully go through everything on this credit report and inform the agencies of any incorrect information listed.

The second thing you should do is cancel any credit cards or lines of credit that you are not using.  If you have available credit it counts as potential debt and your total available debt load affects your credit rating.  Cancelling all the cards you have but do not use will lower your debt capacity and that will be reflected in your credit rating eventually.

The third point to consider when you want to improve your overall credit rating is how much debt you are carrying on your credit cards and how you make your payments.  If your charge cards have high balances you may appear to be a high risk.  Some agencies will not adjust your credit rating as long as you still appear at risk for missing payments.  You should always make at least your minimum payment due to each credit card company by the due date in order to keep your creditors from reporting any late or missing payments.

Fourthly, you should refrain from applying for any new credit cards or lines of credit anywhere.  Every single time you do this, inquiries must be made to the credit reporting agencies.  This looks like you are trying to take on even more debt and these inquiries can result in your credit rating being further reduced.

The only exception to this rule is if you are able to consolidate your debt into one loan where you will have only one payment each month.  If a consolidation loan is available with less interest than the combined rates of all your credit cards, you may want to take it.  You must be completely sure that you can make the payments on time every month however in order to establish this new and improve payment history with the new lender.

Once you do what is needed to gradually improve your credit rating, you must be very sure that you do not allow yourself to become overextended again.  It is essential to maintain the level of control on your spending that you learned while paying off your debt and watching your credit rating improve. Remember that it doesn't take very much effort to get too far into debt and be unable to make your payments.   It does, however take a lot of patience and hard work to bring your credit rating back up again.
